The Burl Wood Phenomena

Most furniture makers and timber craftsman will tell you that it is their love of wood that has inspired them to gravitate to this industry.

James love of timber started at an early age being surrounded by furniture handcrafted, literally, by both his grandfathers and then later by the forests and local timber products of the south west where as a family they holidayed.

In particular, the burl wood captivated James and was the basis of his first business, West Aussie Woodcraft’s. A business based on jarrah burl wood tables, clocks and smaller lines of souvenirs.

Burl wood is actually a very rare phenomenon, caused by a virus or bacteria, and probably only forming itself on approximately one in 20,000 trees. In Europe it has always been in high demand, and highly priced, originally being used to embellish luxury cars and adorning furniture such as grandfather clocks. Sadly in most countries around the world it is a thing of the past but recent times has been reconstructed using multi colored veneers in a finger jointing, rolled then re-veneer technique.

Early in his career James recognized the value and rarity of burl wood, focusing on collecting them whenever opportunity arose and finances permitted. Today Burl wood is the hallmark of Boranup Furniture with most pieces having a small subtle burl inlay, burl paneled doors or in some rare instances one glorious solid slab as a dining or coffee table.

Boranup Furniture Factory Evolving

From Humble beginnings the factory evolved over time, there was never any capital so it was just one shed after another sourced from wherever. Bottom left, the first shed was from a backyard of the forst house I owned in Perth, others were from demolition yards large timbers from demolition woolstores were sourced for roofing trusses and furniture.

Bushpoles were cut from the property and second hand roof sheets from the salvage yards.

The machinery was usually second hand; fortunately it was built well in that day with a few of those machines still working today.

Boranup Gallery Construction in 1989.

Memories of this pioneering year from the pitching of the tent where the truck gave up in the bracken, through the challenge of building the rammed earth gallery walls with a few second hand forms and an hour’s instruction are nostalgic. The high roof was pitched using a bobcat with a 44 gallon drum in the bucket as a lifting platform for the huge wool store jarrah beams while tiger snakes slithered across the site in search of a new home.
